Liplift
What is it?
Liplift, also known as an upper lip lift, is an aesthetic surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the lips, especially the upper lip.
During the surgery, a small segment of skin is removed from the space between the nose and the upper lip to raise the lip and expose more of the teeth. This creates a more youthful and attractive appearance to the lips, as well as increasing the exposure of the upper teeth, giving the appearance of a wider smile.
The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and patients can return to normal activities after a few days.

Who is it for?
A liplift is generally recommended for people who want to improve the appearance of their lips, especially their upper lip. It is most common in people who have a larger space between their nose and upper lip, which can make the lips appear less voluminous and the mouth appear narrower.
Liplift can also be recommended for people who have thin or asymmetrical lips and want to improve their appearance.
However, it’s important to remember that liplift is a surgical procedure and, as such, should only be performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. Before deciding to undergo liplift, it’s important to discuss your expectations and concerns with your doctor, as well as understanding the risks and benefits of the procedure.
Scars
Liplift scars are usually very discreet and well hidden. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon removes a small amount of skin between the nose and the upper lip to lift the lip. The incision is made on the lower edge of the nose, at the transition line between the skin and the mucosa, and is carefully closed with fine sutures.
As the incision is made on the lower edge of the nose, the scars are almost imperceptible and remain well hidden. Over time, the scars tend to become even more discreet, especially if you follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions for taking proper care of the wounds after surgery.
However, it is important to remember that healing can vary from person to person and, in some rare cases, more visible scars can occur.
It is important to discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon before the procedure and to follow the post-operative care instructions to help ensure the best possible healing.
Technical features
The liplift procedure usually involves the following steps:
- Anesthesia: The plastic surgeon administers local anesthesia with or without sedation to ensure that the patient feels no pain during the procedure.
- Incision: The surgeon makes an incision on the lower edge of the nose, at the transition line between the skin and the mucosa.
- Skin removal: The surgeon removes a small segment of skin from the space between the nose and the upper lip to raise the lip and expose more of the teeth.
- Closing the incision: The incision is carefully closed with fine sutures.
- Recovery: The patient is monitored in the clinic for a short period of time before being discharged home. Recovery time can vary, but it usually takes about a week for most people to return to normal activities.
- Follow-up: The surgeon schedules a follow-up appointment to assess the results of the procedure.
It’s important to remember that, as with any surgery, there are risks involved in the liplift procedure. Before deciding to undergo the procedure, it is important to discuss your expectations and concerns with your doctor and carefully follow the post-operative instructions to help ensure a safe and successful recovery.
Type of anesthesia
There are basically two types of anesthesia that can be used in a liplift:
- Local anesthesia: In this type of anesthesia, the plastic surgeon applies a local anesthetic to the area around the upper lip, which numbs the area and prevents the sensation of pain. Local anesthesia is usually sufficient for this type of procedure and the patient remains awake during the procedure.
- General anesthesia: In some cases, the surgeon may opt for general anesthesia, which involves administering drugs to put the patient to sleep for the duration of the procedure. This may be necessary for patients who are very anxious or who are undergoing other surgical procedures in conjunction with the liplift.
The type of anesthesia chosen for the liplift depends on the patient’s preference, the complexity of the procedure and the plastic surgeon’s recommendations. It’s important to discuss your anesthesia options with your doctor before the procedure to ensure that you feel comfortable and safe throughout the process.
Results and benefits
Liplift is a surgical procedure that can offer a number of benefits and results, including:
- Increasing the size and projection of the lips: Liplift can improve the size and projection of the lips, leaving them more voluminous and in proportion to the face.
- Exposure of the upper teeth: The liplift can expose the upper teeth more, improving the aesthetics of the smile.
- Improving wrinkles around the mouth: Liplift can help smooth out wrinkles around the mouth, such as smile lines, giving the face a more youthful appearance.
- Long-lasting results: Liplift can offer long-lasting and permanent results, with little need for touch-ups or maintenance.
- Quick recovery: Recovery after liplift is generally quick and most people can return to normal activities within a week of the procedure.
- Increased self-esteem: The aesthetic improvement of the smile and lips can lead to increased self-esteem and self-confidence, improving the patient’s quality of life.
It’s important to remember that results can vary from person to person and that liplift is a surgical procedure that involves risks and complications. It is important to discuss your goals, expectations and concerns with an experienced plastic surgeon before deciding to undergo the procedure.
Recovery
- Swelling and pain: It’s normal to have some swelling and discomfort after a liplift. The plastic surgeon usually prescribes medication to help control pain and reduce swelling.
- Dressing and wound care: The surgeon may apply a dressing to the treated area to help protect the wound and reduce swelling. It is important to carefully follow the surgeon’s instructions for cleaning and caring for the wound to minimize the risk of infection.
- Activity restrictions: The patient may need to avoid intense physical activity, sun exposure and consumption of hard and spicy foods for a few days after the procedure.
- Return to normal activities: Most people can return to normal activities a week after the procedure, but it can take a few weeks for the swelling to completely subside and for the final results to be visible.
- Follow-up with the surgeon: The surgeon will usually schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing and evaluate the results of the procedure.
Post-operative care
Post-operative care after a liplift is important to ensure proper healing of the incision and minimize the risk of complications:
- Rest: It is important to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity in the first few weeks after the procedure.
- Food: Avoid hard or spicy foods that could irritate the treated area. Prefer lighter, easily digestible foods.
- Hygiene: Keep the treated area clean and sanitized following the plastic surgeon’s instructions. Wash the area with mild soap and lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing it hard.
- Medication: Take the medication prescribed by your plastic surgeon to help control pain and reduce swelling.
- Dressing: Keep the dressing clean and dry, following the plastic surgeon’s instructions.
- Rest: It is recommended to avoid lying on your side or stomach for the first few weeks after the procedure, to avoid excessive pressure on the treated area.
- Sun exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated area for at least 4 weeks after the procedure.
- Follow-up appointments: Follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions regarding post-operative follow-up appointments. Follow-up is important to assess healing and the results of the procedure.
It’s important to remember that recovery from a liplift can vary from person to person. It is essential to follow all the plastic surgeon’s recommendations to ensure proper healing and the best possible results. In the event of any doubts or complications during recovery, it is important to contact your plastic surgeon immediately.
