Breast Reduction

What is breast reduction?

It is a surgical procedure that allows the volume and excessive weight of the breast (macromastia) to be reduced by removing excess skin, fat and some glandular tissue.

At the same time, it improves the shape, symmetry (including the areolas) and positioning of the breast, giving more volume to the upper pole.

It is indicated for women who are dissatisfied with the weight and volume of their breasts, usually associated with sagging. They often complain of :
  • Postural discomfort, with back pain or cervicobrachialgia
  • Uncomfortable wearing and choosing bras and bikinis, often with marks on the bra straps due to excessive weight
  • Dermatosis problems in the breast crease area, due to constant wetting and rubbing
  • Emotional changes associated with excessive breast volume
It is indicated for women who feel that reducing their weight will bring them better health and body harmony:
  • Healthy
  • Non-smokers
  • With expectations appropriate to your body situation and intrinsic conditions, such as skin elasticity and laxity, as well as the type and location of the resulting scars.

Breast reduction is performed through incisions that vary in location and extent, through which adipose-glandular breast tissue and excess skin are removed, followed by remodeling of the breast with superior repositioning of the areola-mamillary complex.

In selected cases of breast hypertrophy, reduction can be achieved through liposuction, with minimal scarring

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia, often with a laryngeal mask, a milder type of general anesthesia that allows post-operative recovery to be faster and better tolerated.

The location and extent of the scars is adapted to each case, depending on the degree of hypertrophy and ptosis. In very slight reductions, the surgery can be performed through an incision limited to the periareolar area, but usually also involves a vertical incision, below the areola, as well as a horizontal incision (resulting in an inverted T-shaped scar), camouflaged in the lower breast crease, the extent of which depends on the amount of breast tissue and skin removed.

The results of breast reduction surgery are immediately visible, both in terms of body harmonization and comfort.

In the following weeks, there is an improvement in the associated edema, as well as an attenuation of the scars, with a very favorable result on self-image.
The benefits are felt on several levels:

  • Increased self-esteem, due to the favorable impact on self-image and body harmony
  • Better quality of life, better physical health, less discomfort and postural pain
  • More freedom in routine activities and exercise
  • More freedom in choosing clothes

After a short hospital stay of 24 hours, recovery can usually take place at home.
You must comply with the medication and all the other recommendations of the medical team.

You will be accompanied by your team in the making of dressings for 10-12 days.

Some limitation of activities involving arm movements will be advised in the first week, while maintaining daily personal care activities and some routine activities.
